1. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI's)
Prozac, Luvox, Zoloft, Anafranil, Wellbutrin
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI's) are prescribed for anxiety, depression, and/or obsessive-compulsive disorder. None of them have been approved for children under the age of 6. Even with well know names such as Prozac, Luvox, Zoloft, Anafranil, and Wellbutrin, patients and family members are advised by health professionals to closely monitor adults and children taking antidepressants for signs of suicide.
2. Antipsychotic Medications
Haloperidol (Haldol), Thioridazine, Fluphenazine, Chlorpromazine
Many children with autism have significant behavioral problems which doctors attempt to regulate with antipsychotic medications that reduce the activity of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain. Older antipsychotic medications such as haloperidol (Haldol), thioridazine, fluphenazine, and chlorpromazine, may be effective in treating serious behavioral problems, but all can have serious side effects such as sedation, muscle stiffness, and abnormal movements.
3. Atypical Antipsychotics
Risperdone, Zyprexa, Geodon
Some of the newer "atypical" antipsychotics are in the early stages of testing and no one knows what the long term effects of atypical antipsychotics are on autistic children. Of these drugs, Risperdone, Zyprexa and Geodon are the most common. Clonidine, an antihypertensive, is sometimes prescribed for impulsiveness, aggression or anxiety.
4. Stimulants
Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall
Ritalin, Concerta and Adderall are stimulants like cocaine and amphetamines which rev-up the nervous system and are used with children having hyperactivity disorders to focus attention and decrease behavior issues. The FDA has received reports that these drugs may be linked to sudden death, strokes, heart attacks and hypertension in adults and children. The Military Personnel Procurement Manual lists the prescribed use of Ritalin as a "permanent disqualifier" for joining the military.
5. Anticonvulsants
Tegretol, Lamictal, Topamax, Depakote
Anticonvulsants such as Tegretol, Lamictal, Topamax or Depakote have been prescribed for the treatment of seizures. Although medication can reduce the number of seizures, it usually doesn’t eliminate them.
